Like, damn, they make parts of this game a little too easy at times. They are super tanky and their ability to slowly whittle down opponents made them the perfect Ace Pokemon killer. To be far, it was for two reasons: One, I grinded for this gym. This is where the game goes from kind of hard to. He easily was the hardest gym leader for me. He also got rid of his Swadloon for a Shelment and Karablast. The jump in levels is quite insane (it's 26 while my team didn't even break 23).
Out of all the gyms, Burgh of all people gave me the most trouble (he was my reason why grinded before Elesa). If I had trouble with her, I could just use a Magnemite. I will admit, I did cheat a little since I taught Magby Psychic back in Black 2. His new Pokemon is a Pidove which didn't last long to my Mareep.

Honestly, due to this, Challenge Mode is now my prefer way to play BW2. It as the first time in a Pokemon playthrough where I didn't feel like I needed to grind before the league. Seriously, my team's average level when we reached the Pokemon League was 62. Due to how exp works in gen 5, this meant outside of that one occasion, I didn't have to grind once. And keep in mind, this is from using the Lucky Egg. Even when I started to out level enemy trainers, they got a boost in levels. I was out-leveled more often than not, but only by two levels. I only seriously grinded once in my playthrough (between the third and fourth gym) and never had to do it again. The trainer's Pokemon are at the just the right level. But actually no, in fact, Challenge Mode might just have the single best level curve in a Pokemon game ever. With increased levels, I thought I may have to grind more often in Challenge Mode. I did have to heal a lot and almost every battle though, which is something I can't say about normal mode. Yes, they hit harder, but it as actually quite rare for them to withstand one hit even in the late game. Also, if I wasn't clear, I was playing White 2.įor the most part, they weren't too different from the normal difficulty. I made sure to fight every possible trainer including those in optional locations and dungeons. I used items in battle, swapped mons between enemy Pokemon, and used the Lucky Egg as much as possible. This was a "vanilla" playthrough just to see how hard this mode is. Magmortar (traded from Black 2 as a Magby) Yeah, it's clunky to unlock and it's rather stupid that you need to have two DS systems and at least a complete copy of Black 2 to unlock it. I fortunately have a ton of DS's around and a complete game of Black 2 from my friend. But if you restart Black 2 you lose the key, so the only way you can start playing Challenge Mode from the start is by transferring it to a fresh game of BW2. You have to beat Black 2 to unlock the key to play this mode.

If there is one major fault this mode has, it's how to unlock it. The A.I is supposedly smarter, but I didn't notice a single difference. Gym Leaders also get an additional Pokemon on their team. Important trainers will have more Pokemon with held items (the elite four and champion had every single of their mons holding an item). All trainer's Pokemon have their levels increased (wild Pokemon are unaffected). It makes several changes to the game to make it more difficult. I have always praised BW2 for having difficulty settings, but recently I realized that I have never actually played the game's hard mode.
