Transformers 4 and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes amount to "adventure of the week" type sagas more reminiscent of the 007 series. What we're seeing with the Marvel Universe and those which would follow in their footsteps is a kind of long-running franchise that absolutely demands viewer knowledge of the whole affair. Captain America: The Winter Soldier's second act plot twist is meaningless for those who didn't see the previous Captain America. Walt Disney's Iron Man 3 not only requires you to have seen Iron Man and Iron Man 2, but also The Avengers.
The film's opening news montage establishes the new status quo and audiences are off to the races with little need to look back.
